THIS is how you do genderbends. There is NO reason to sexualize their costumes or their poses unless you’re going for a porn thing (perfectly acceptable). The only costume that’s really been changed at all is Bruce’s and all they’ve really done is exchanged the pants for a pencil skirt. Not a mini-skirt. A pencil skirt.

Also the fact that Nat’s costume is completely unchanged on the male version just goes to show how little the original is sexualized, despite what people think. It’s figure-hugging, yes. The decision to keep Fury bald is just amazing. This mummy, found in the Altai mountains of Siberia, is actually that of a young woman who died at about the age of twenty-five; she is thought to have been a member of the Pazyryk tribe.

She was buried with six horses and two similarly-tattooed men (the horned griffon that decorates her shoulder also appears on the man buried closest to her, covering most of his right side), possibly escorts. She was also wearing a horse-hair wig, silk, and elaborate boots, which is all a level of ceremony that would have likely only been accorded to a woman of high rank. You didn’t get inked like this unless you were very important, and had worked your way up to that importance.

…Hence, of course, the references to her by researchers as ‘The Ukok Princess,’ although due to the lack of weapons in her grave they have concluded that the woman was in fact a healer or a storyteller.

And now I’m all consumed with curiosity: Who was she? What amazing things did she accomplish? Why these symbols, and what did they mean? Who were the two men alongside her?

John has a depression linked eating disorder. In the opening of Pink, after John wakes up, his breakfast consists of an apple that he doesn’t eat. This is very common in PTSD, especially those who have suicidal thoughts and tendencies, which we know John does. It’s not that they are actively starving themselves, it’s that they just don’t see the point eating, as an effort to stay alive.

When he meets Sherlock, John eats dinner as if he is starving. He digs into his food, talks with his mouth full, as if it is the first full meal he has had in months. Which is entirely likely, since John has been home for several months at that point. Again, this is very typical of people who have been suffering this type of eating disorder, and find that they are no longer as painfully depressed.

Sherlock even goes so far as to point out that after moving in together, John puts on an average of a pound a week in weight. John brushes it off as being normal. He doesn’t deny it, he just points out that he is eating more than one meal a day. This implies that he wasn’t eating this often before he limped into Sherlock’s life.

This makes Sherlock’s insistence that John eat even more powerful. He goes so far as to halt an investigation on more than one occasion, to make sure John gets a meal into him. A well-fed John is a happy John, not because he is full, but because it proves that he is happy enough to actually eat.

Oh so it’s okay for us to freak out over Benedict’s shirtless scene and have multiple scenes of Pine being in underwear but the same people who enjoy those scenes are the ones who are up in arms about this:

Double fucking standard.

Um, does society have a history of objectifying men, to the point where a man’s physical attractiveness is pretty much the be-all, end-all of his worth?

Do male characters ever get reduced entirely down to being pretty? Do male characters, when attractive and competent, immediately get branded as Marty Stus and “pandering”?

Do we have a history of making male characters objects, solely to be acted upon, pretty set dressing for the protagonist to make out with after the battle is won?

Do we, culturally speaking, objectify men’s bodies to the point where naked or nearly-naked big-name actors are the immediate reason a demographic will flock to see a film?

Do we advertise films and video games and the like with scantily-clad men, whose clothing is far from useful in regards to actually doing anything, once again rendering them objects to be acted upon rather than characters bearing their own agency and making their own choices?

Do we, consciously or unconsciously, only consider men in relation to other people “Oh, such-and-such’s brother! Anywho’s husband,” rather than letting them stand independently as human beings?

No.

But we do do all that to women.

The fact that this scene was cut, while Marcus’s scene was not, is massively problematic — once again, a man is an active participant and a woman is the object on which he acts.

In Marcus’s scene, Kirk disregards her request that he keep his back to her while she changes. He objectifies her, and we, as the audience, are meant to do the same.

Considering the consequences of this wide-scale, normalized objectification of women — i.e., the nice guy syndrome, entitlement, rape culture, street harassment — is not at all given any kind of analogous situation for cis men, nor any such consequences, it’s a pretty big goddamn problem that Carol Marcus’ gratuitous underwear scene exists.

Especially in context that this scene was cut.

This is Japan in a nutshell. Forget all the crazy stuff with the weird tv programs and the cosplaying—that’s just the outer shell that gets attention because it’s unusual. This, this is the beauty of the country. I’ve had little grandmothers chase me down because I dropped my shinkansen tickets. In amusement parks, the attendants do their upmost to get lost items (usually cardigans or kids’ shoes) back to the owners—before the owners even realize they’d lost said item(s). I’ve had complete strangers not only give my thorough directions but have offered to drive me to the place I needed to go.

It is so, so, so hard to go back to the States after you get the J-treatment. I mean, Japan has its downside (“What is this madness you call pizza???”), but the general attitudes of everyone—even the so-called hardcore yankees (two of whom who, on a blazing summer day, helped me find one of my schools when I was heinously lost in the labyrinth that is the neighborhood in which said school is located)—is the epitome of the mindset that I wish everyone would adopt. Because yelling at people gets you nowhere. And being able to empathize with people kinda helps make this country a really nice place to live in.
